Hey... I think that I am going to email about that cake club. I think it would be fun to meet some of the people who are into what I'm into. Plus, all the tips that people who have a lot of experience can teach me... i'm always looking to mooch on other ideas.

Jen,
Tracy has been bugging me for over a year to join. I was planning on it when I got diagnosed with uterine cancer in August everything was put on hold. Maybe we could car pool to save gas.

Foster, where are you? I have no problem car pooling... we did it to get to cake class in Davenport. My husband keeps telling me I need to find something to do that is fun for me outside the house so i'm not so cranky... ha ha ... maybe this would be perfect. I cant' believe you're in Clinton... I mean I know people live there just can't believe anyone from here is SO close.

I have my apprenticeship classes every monday from September through May and those are the days that the cake club is on and and those same months. This is my last year though so next year I can. I drive up to Ankeny every week for my classes so I wouldn't be able to do both either b/c I leave the area around 2 and get back around midnight every monday.

A get together with the rest of us would be a lot of fun too! Everytime I am in Michael's at Davenport I am looking for Melvira!

This is like an Iowa reunion. I am in Dubuque and Steve's Ace has some great supplies for cake decorating. icon_smile.gif I am much closer to Minneapolis than all of you, but Sweet Celebrations has stuff or the Vanilla Bean in Madison also does.

Sorry to hijack the thread--but on note, I am always amazed by the poor cakes at Hy-Vee and Walmart. I will have to peek the next time I go grocery shopping to see what they are charging for fondant covered cakes. Interesting! icon_lol.gif

Oh, and leily, my parents are going to Muscatine tomorrow--my brother lives there. Small small world here!

And, one more thing--I am friends with one of our Hy-Vee's bakery managers (we have 3 stores in Dubuque), and he said all they pretty much defrost everything and bake nothing on site. Hmmmm. I am a little confused from what everyone else is saying.

From my understanding they used to bake their cakes but started having them shipped in. I haven't worked in a Hy-Vee yet, only a wal-mart so I can't say for sure, but I used to work with two employees who left Hy-Vee and this is what I was told. Who knows! I imagine sooner or later they will go to frozen if they haven't just to keep up with everyone else.

It is a small world and I am so happy to see more iowans and midwesterners on CC, I don't feel so alone! ALthough at the same time I am starting to worry about competition icon_lol.gif

It really depends on what your bakery manager wants to do, bringing in frozen cakes is an option, but some stores are still baking their own. The frozen cakes are pretty good, especially if you have a baker who likes to overbake the cakes.

Did you know that Steve's built a new store on the northern/western side of Dubuque and it is better than ever? It is really nice!

Anyhow, it is nice to know there are others out there with this wacky obsession.

The cat is actually a pic I found online that makes me hysterical. I used to have a cat that looked a lot like that, but she got a little wacky on us (and the baby) and had to be sent to the kitty hotel (aka Humane Society).

Aww... well at least you have this funny pic to make you smile. It's SO cute! I didn't know they built a new store... I just know the location over by Michael's. I haven't been there in like 3 months, I've taken a break from teaching the Wilton classes in both D'port and Dubuque. I had better go check it out, but someone will have to give me directions! Hahahah!
