Okay, I am of two minds about this (sort of). I have three cats and clean their litter boxes every day, and while I do, I think to myself, "ew, they're walking in this, then getting on my lap, my furniture, my children..." So I can see the point of not wanting a cat-contaminated cake. I would've tossed the cake myself.
I just hope that the original poster isn't feeling too attacked here. mom2seven, please understand that everyone is just speaking their views. I hope this won't stop you from enjoying this site in the future. I hope you don't feel like everyone is ganging up on you, I think many people just have strong feelings about pets vs. food. (not unfounded, may I add) I hope you won't take it personally. As a cat owner, I have learned that I have to keep mine locked in another room while I'm baking, because they are drawn to my kitchen every time I bake and seem to be magnetically attracted to any cake-in-progress.

Personally I don't think its a big deal, if it were a cake I was making for friends or family I would do the exact same thing! I would scrape and refrost.

But, this cake is going to a school to be fed to children. Do you call every child's parent to poll them on whether they want their kid to eat a recovered cake? It's unfortunate. Animals happen. Keep the cake at home, feed it to your own kids, but stop by Walmart in the morning and pick up something different for the class.

If you tell the adults you are serving that your cat stepped in it and they are okay with it, then fine. But I would not serve to a child.

Not ALL N. TX schools, I'm in N. TX, and this cake is NOT for the kids.

I'm getting flooded with PM for ladies saying not to listen to most of you hear, messages saying they understand what happened and they would have done the same thing. So lets just end this whole thing. No one posting on how gross this is to anyone else - Drop it, I'm sorry I even posted this story.

Wow this post is moving fast!!
I am going to have to agree with the majority here.
more then likely no one would get sick, but still, it is pretty gross. If I found out that my son was fed cake that an animal stepped on, no matter how sure you were about getting all the "contaminated" part removed, I would be very upset!
