I am doing a wedding cake in July and the couple wants all buttercream. They also like the brush embroidery look in the pattern of the bodice of the wedding dress, which is simple flowers and leaves. So, my question is, can brush embroidery be done on buttercream? I've only done it on fondant.

I thought if I let the buttercream crust, smoothed it out (Melvira style, of course) and let it sit overnight, that it might be firm enough to do the embroidery with a really fine brush, some soft buttercream and a bit of vanilla. Anyone else have experience doing this?

Any help would be appreciated.

That is what I did in my Wilton class - I don't see why it wouldn't work!

I have doubts that it would work but it wouldn't hurt to try on a practice run. Let us know if it does workicon_smile.gif

Also, I've done buttercream cakes and put fondant cut-outs on the sides and then did brush embroidery on that fondant.

I think as long as your buttercream crusted first and you were really gently that you could do it. You may not have the base color of the cake come through as well though, as the buttercream would maybe mix together. It's definitely easier on fondant.

I agree w/ everyone else about doing a test run on something else first. Good luck! thumbs_up.gif

I've done buttercream on buttercream, buttercream on fondant and royal on fondant. It has all worked just fine. (Buttercream on buttercream is a sage green oval w/pink flowers on it in my pics).

You'll be fine! Just practice!

I was taught to do brush embroidery on crusted BC! I did a cake a few weeks ago and I think it came out okay.

Here is one I did on BC (mind you, it's an ugly practice cake w/ an weird, off-center initial on top!) Just used a very fine, clean paintbrush on crusted BC.

jillycakes -

That's not an ugly cake - it's a prototype.

The real cake has yet to be done.

I think your embroidery came out great for a practice run. And it is practice that will make the cake you do for a client or relative a perfect one.
