I need one about 3" long.

I know I could just cut the basic guitar shape from fondant, but what do I do about the strings?

If I use icing for strings, it will just lay flat on top.

Has anyone done this? Any suggestions?

I think icing would be fine. or you could make a small raised bar on each end as part of the guitar design and do RI stringwork. but that would be quite fragile.

If you check my photos, you can see a picture of a cake I made with a fondant guitar --I piped black strings of BC on top. I used a #1 tip, but you could try a .5 tip if you have one (or a very tiny parachment opening). Good luck icon_smile.gif

I made a tiny violin out of fondant for my Irish wedding cake in Tulsa last fall. You can see it in the detail shot on my Photos. I drew the strings on with a food color marker, after making the bridge and fingerboard very low so that it was less obvious that the strings weren't separate piped items. It is about 3" long, maybe just a little bit longer. I started out with a guitar cookie cutter and squeezed the sides to make it skinnier, and cut out a body (not the neck) from piece of brown fondant. When it was good and dry, I added a neck with fondant on a wire, but you could use a dry spaghetti string if you wanted it edible.
