I made the NFSC last night and I added about a teaspoon of cinnamon. I cut out with a 3 inch round cookie cutter. I want to make a baseball bouquet for my nephew. I did one batch putting sticks in then baking but the rest I did by placing the stick in immediately after they came out of the oven. I found that to be easiest.
Then I made a rolled buttercream icing. I found that if I cut them out and put in the freezer I could handle them better. I used Kayro syrup as the adhesive (I hope I didn't use too much!). I had them all laid out on the kitchen counter for about an hour then I laid them into my large square cake holder with wax paper in between the layers. I hope that was long enough to leave them out to 'dry'. We have been fighting ants and I didn't want to take any chances. Tonight I will decorate with royal icing, red for the threads, I may even put the players numbers on them.
I wonder how long the royal will need to dry. After they dry I kindof don't know what to do next. I hope I didn't make them too early. They won't be eaten until Saturday, but I am swamped the rest of the week and wouldn't have time to do them. I found a great baseball Easter basket that I am going to serve them in.
I guess I need to wrap them individually, how and with what I don't know yet. I got some of that green Styrofoam at Walmart. It is a circle and it fit wonderfully in the bottom of the basket I purchased. I hope that will hold them up straight. I guess I need to shred some paper and stuff in there too.
Sorry for going on and on. Any pointers and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
By the way, I was a bit disappointed in the dryness of the NFSC. I hope the icing will help even it out?
If you are just doing details on the cookies, the royal might dry in a few hours. I did some details in the a.m. and bagged around 4pm. It really depends on how thick the icing is, how much humidity where you live, etc.
You can buy the bags at the craft store, I think Wilton sells them. I buy mine at the bulk food store that also sells candy making supplies. I think Wilton's comes with twisty ties, but I just use thin ribbon. I think if you bag them, then they will be okay until Saturday. I would have baked Thursday, so that's just one day early, but that's a personal choice really.
I've used the artificial flower foam, but I think styrofoam will be okay too. Wrap it with tissue paper or put some on top to cover it up (or use the shred stuff).
Dryness? I'm always worried mine are still too moist.
I think you will do fine! Don't forget to post a picture when they are done!
