This is probably a silly question but here it goes. Do you always have to use dowels when stacking cakes? or does it just matter if the top tier is large and heavy? This is what I am making. A 9" round 3, 1" layers thick with a baseball on top. The baseball will be a 4" diameter and no more than 2" tall. Do I need to use a cake plate (foamcore) and dowels?
I have only done 2 stacked cakes and I used dowels for them, but I wasn't sure if it is always needed.
I aqree I would definintely dowel the cake if I was transporting it, just for stability, you wouldn't want to hit a bump and there goes the baseball. I guess I am a dowel freak too, I always dowel cakes of if transporting, I just don't want layers sliding all over the place.
