I'm wanting to make a large mouth bass cake for my husband's birthday. This is my first carved cake. I don't have time to order luster dust and I've checked with all the local stores that carry cake decorating supplies and the only thing I was able to find was gel food coloing. Can I use this to paint my bass and if so how go I do it? Do I mix it with something else to thin it out? Thanks!

All you have to do is color the gel, then pipe or spread it on your BC. This is done all the time, especially for water effects (lake, waterfalls, etc.). You should be OK.

Isawyer,
Are you talking about piping gel?
I think mommabeaver 25 was talking about the gel food coloring, but I might have misunderstood the question.
I have used the gel food coloring mixing with lemon extract to paint on fondant. But haven't tried buttercream.

Oops! I think you're right re color gel. Sorry.
Yes, gel colors thinned with vodka or lemon extract will work. Make sure the BC is thoroughly crusted, then LIGHTLY paint on it with a soft brush.
