I've seen many castle (princess) cakes that have the towers made of paper towel rolls covered in fondant. Can anyone tell me exactly how to make these? Do you cover the paper towel roll in anything such as royal icing??? How far in advance can I make the towers??? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there
I covered the paper towel rolls in plastic kitchen wrap, then I rolled out the fondant, and placed it around the roll, sticking it at the back. I made sure it was still lose enough. I let it dry for a couple of days, making sure that the base was going to be very straight, and then i removed the tower from the paper towel roll, and let it dry for a few more days, all up at least a week.
I also mixed gum trag into my fondant to make it dry quicker.
here is my two cakes made with this method.

I don't really have a full week. The lady ordered the cake for this Friday. Can I leave the papertowel rolls inside to help it stand up??

I suppose you could, I've never done it that way, but I can't see why it wouldnt work.

you can leave the paper towel tubes in. I used it for the base on a body of a 3D robot monkey thing. It's in my pics. It actually gave more support. As long as they don't expect to eat the towers, it should be no problem.
Hey,
Also add some gumtex or even powdered fixodent to the fondant. That will also help it harden up.
I left the paper towel rolls inside mine - I covered my towers with sugar paste which never gets quite as hard as gumpaste. I used liquid (a very thick liquid) glucose to "glue" the sugarpaste to the towel rolls. It's great "glue".

If you put gumtex or gumtrag in it, it will dry just as hard as gumpaste.

great tips guys i have to make a castle cake next month ........i just started thinking about how i should approah this ....helps a ton
or you could just roll gumpaste instead of fondant around the towers........once they're hard remove the towers and fill them with small candies or toys........that would be a cool surprise!!!
I just did a castle cake using cup cones for the towers one inverted on the other, used white chocolate to stick them together and it worked real well.
Hope this helps.
I used the papertowels for towers on my castle cake and I did a layer of buttercream on the papertowel roller before I put the fondant on so it would stick. I left the roller in and it was fine ... the kids ate the MMF off of the roller. If you have any other questions I can help with just let me know!
