I am making a beach cake. For the "water" would I use straight piping gel colored blue over the cake or should I mix the piping gel with frosting?? Not sure which way to go, I had just heard that using piping gel colored blue makes it look more realistic to water. ![]()
Piping gel would look more realistic, but doesn't taste good. I think there is a recipe for a homemade version that tastes better, but I'm sorry, I don't have it.
You just mix a little color with the gel and 'paint' it on the cake, I wouldn't mix the piping gel with frosting. If you decide not to use the gel, I would just go with blue frosting.
I have a couple beach cakes in my gallery with blue frosting and one penguin cake with the piping gel, if you'd like to see how they look.
oh my!! the sos cake! how did you get the frosting to do that for the water?? what tools or technique did you use to get the wave effect?? will that work on a rectangular cake? also how did you get the white tips on the water?
Oh, thank you for the compliment!! The BC was rather stiff, so I just put it on thick and kind of 'swooped' it up with my spatula. You should be able to do it on any shape cake. The white tips were just a touch of white icing that I dabbed on with my finger.
Hope that makes sense...
Yes your water looks as if it is really moving and the white tips really make it look real!! I can't believe you just dab it with your finger! i am going to try it. So you said your BC was stiff, should it be that way to achieve the look? i thought you would use medium consistency icing instead??
