Hey everyone,
I have been a member on CC for a while now but have never posted.. I guess I'm a little intimidated by the genius work done on this forum. I have only been cake decorating for about a year..and I LOVE IT! Well my first question is.. where do I even start to learn how to make those gorgeous butterflies I see on some of your cakes? I would love to do them on cupcakes for easter but I would like to get some practice in before hand. Thanks for all your help, you are all so helpful!!

Good morning, and welcome!
Which butterflies in particular were you interested in? There are several techniques. If you want to put them on cupcakes you could do a Chocolate transfer. Try this link...

Welcome to Cake Central. There are quite a few butterfly techniques.

Rice paper
Royal Icing
Fondant/Gumpaste
Transfers

Just to name a few. icon_smile.gif I've done royal icing/colorflow butterflies which are fairly easy, but if there is a particular design you saw in the galleries, I would PM the decorator. Everyone here is very helpful.

Have a look at this 'How to' article here on CC:

http://www.cakecentral.com/article16-How-To-Make-Realistic-Edible-Butterflies.html

I made some recently and they are simple to do (just fiddly!). I used wafer paper that was made with potato starch, rather than rice paper (its what was available) and I found that they dried much quicker than the article says (had all mine complete in the same day!). Just be sure to omit the stamens/antenne if the butterflies are going to be eaten!

p.s. Welcome to Cake Central!

I bought a mold at my cake supplier that was an angel AND a butterfly. Used fondant to mold and then just put it on the cake! I don't have that cake on my office computer, but, I'll TRY to get it on this afternoon when I get home!

I also took wafer paper class and did a royal icing butterfly. The RI was SUPPOSED to be delicate...and apparently it WAS.....it broke before I got it on a cake! LOL I HATE RI!!
