for those of you who have a business outside of the home (ie a shop) are you able to afford a business just doing cakes yourself? Do you you think you need additional staff or additional items to sell (such as supplies or other bakery items?)

I would like to have a business some day but I wanst sure if I could afford to do so on my own just doing cakes. I dont know if I could work with someone else on cakes because I think I might be a control freak. Now if another person did something else.....I could probably handle that.

Just wasnt sure which to explore, shop or possibly a licenced business inside of the home.

Ihave heard that alot of bakeries have to offer a meal to make enough to break even or turn a profit....like a modest breakfast, coffee or lunch menu. It would be nice to tie in a coffee shop to get the morning crowd and some breakfast pastries and then maybe they will pick up other stuff. That is my dream ~ I really hope it works out for you icon_smile.gif

I think if you can earn the reputation of just doing cakes....and can charge sevearl hundred $$$$ for your cakes, then maybe a bakery isn't needed. I read that Margaret Braun's cakes can cost up the $25,000.00!!! To be that good.....

I'd like to have a bakery. Not one that also sells pastries but just sells costume made cakes and cookies. Perhaps incorpoate cake/cookie decorating classes for additional income.

I started out taking any orders just to get income. We have worked really hard to gain a reputation and have always done really little advertising. Now I only take cake orders and am able to be a little more choosier on what I take after 11 years of having a shop. We've had commercial accounts but let them all go cause we are making $$ on cake art instead of cookies and pastries.

It takes a while to get established. So you need to be willing to work a lot of hours to get where you want to be. If the shop is your only source of income as mine has been then you gotta do what you gotta do to make ends meet. Be there all night if you have to. I have a daughter who bakes and helps decorate. So you could say 2 of us kick but with orders. We always turn away business every weekend. I use to be upset with the home bakers when we were struggling to get by. But I pray about our business and God has never let us go hungry.

You might need at least one person. It is so hard to do messy stuff like bake or decorate with customers coming in and the phone ringing. You will get very distracted.
