I'm making a cake for my stepsons birthday that is going to be one 10" square topped with one 6" square (each 3" high), iced and decorated in buttercream. While I need to support to top tier with any dowels/boards? It's just for a family party, so nothing super spiffy, but I don't want it to sink either icon_smile.gif

While I be all right to just stack the smaller layer on top of the larger layer? Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi and welcome!!!

What sort of cakes are you making? If they are dense, I wouldn't bother with dowel, but you probably should wait for some other opinions!!

Oh, it'll just be a standard yellow cake. He actually requested no cake at all, just icing!

You know, it'll probably be fine, especially if it's a pretty firm cake, but why not go ahead and do a plate and dowel just for the practice? That's what I do.

I suggest you use dowels. Just use around 3 to support the 6" cake on top and then one dowel in the center that goes between the 6 and 10 inch cake. Make sure to sharpen your middle dowel so it goes through the middle board easily.
