I've put probably 1/4 a bottle of red red wilton paste in about 1 1/2 cups of buttercream. Can someone help me? Is there a trick? (Before I throw this cake out the wondow) hehe

Thanks in advance.

Try letting it sit for a bit, it will darken. If it doesn't darken enough, I guess add more color. I have the same problem with Wilton colors. Can't wait until I run out and can restock with Americolor, I hear they are MUCH better!

I usually use a mixture of reds...Americolor and Wilton. It takes a LOT to make a good red!

Someone mentioned using Kool Aid to color buttercream, but then you will have flavored (cherry) buttercream as well. You would have to have a cake and filling that goes with cherry, I guess. I'm going to try it and if it tastes good/looks good I'm going to use it to make my dds birthday cake this summer.

I tried the Kool Aid trick...I must have done something wrong, though. It never got red-red and tasted really bitter.

Oh...thanks for the warning! I'll try it on a small amount of leftovers or something first.

My red got redder after I let it sit out a while. However, my 3 year old thinks my topsy turvy cake is so bright and colorful she keeps breaking it off and messing it up. I almost cried... 3 times. And let me tell you, she was is trouble. I've spent 9 hours on this cake. Good thing I really love my 1 and 3 year old!!!! OK--thanks for the vent.

I wish I could tell you it gets better, but most of my decorating time is spent chasing my 5 yr old and 7 yr old out of my kitchen. My little one can 'sense' buttercream from a mile away and can't seem to stop himself!!
I turn into mean cake mama when I bake, everyone is banned from the kitchen! icon_redface.gif If they behave, they get to lick the spatulas and beater when I'm done.
