gumpaste STINKS...Bleh...

On the bright side, I made 3 Callas, and 2 roses (at $5 each) in 1 hour. So I basically just made $25/hour playing with stinky gumpaste...

Either I have worked with it for so long that I no longer notice, or my sniffer is broken because it doesn't smell bad to me.

it smells like sugar unless it is old and spoiled and then it will also be a BIt slimey

I think it is wonderful to work with I do get best results it it is minimum a few days old and for roses I like it a week old it is firmer to work with.

or I take some older gumpaste amd mix with the new to give it the firmer texture.

don't give up like everything there is a learning curve.

In the last couple of weeks I have used (for the first time) Squires Modelling Paste, Petal Paste and fondant with gum tragacanth added (to make gumpaste) and none of it smells funny, just sweet, and my sense of smell is very good!

mine doesnt' smell - but I make it. could be some of the commercially made brands have preservatives in them that cause a funny smell.

How funny! I was making calla lilies today and for some bizarre reason I took a nibble at the gumpaste. (It's Wilton gumpaste) It actually tastes worst than the fondant!!!!!!

I've decided that the only gumpaste that really works is the one I make. I use Scott C. Woolleys
recipe and have a good turn out.

I'm with Shirley, I used to use Wiltons, now I use Nicholas Lodge's & both of them only taste sweet & never had a bad smell.

Gumpaste made with Tylose doesn't stink. Plus...it's MUCH whiter than other types. And...it dries stronger. I won't use anything else.

That is funny, I think that the wilton gumpaste tasted better than the fondant. The fondant tastes like glue smells, the gumpasted didn't really have a taste or a smell that I could tell, but it was a fresh bag the store had just gotten in. Maybe it changes the longer it sits.
