I have a delema. Someone asked me to make them the 3D Train cake from Wilton. Well...I said that I would. But now, I'm having second thoughts. I really want to make the cake, I've never done a 3D before...Can anyone give me a little advice on how and what I need to do.

Thank You All So Much, In Advance... icon_smile.gif

The 3d pans look far more intimidating than they really are.
I use chocolate or yellow cake for them, you'll need a little more than one mix to get it to fill all the way.
Make sure that you tie it tightly so the top doesn't come off while baking and place on a baking sheet to catch overflow (you're better off over filling than under.

The trains can be decorated so many different ways, I use a bigger star tip most of the time though I have done smooth icing too.

I just did a train cake this past weekend and to do the whole engine and coal car i used a long loaf pan and 3 cake mixes (one mix at a time) and then just because i didnt need any more cake i used rice crispy treats to form the top of the tank. My biggest concern was transporting it an hour to New orleans, i was so sure it was going to fall over i save the piping til I got there, but covered in fondant it didnt move on me at all. I DO have the train pan (bought off ebay!) have never used it , this way was super easy!

mbelgard is right. 3d cake pans are more intimidating than they really are. Do you have the instructions with your pan? You just cover with buttercream, make sure it is a stiff buttercream, than cover in the stars. I did the 3d Winnie the Pooh years ago for my son's 1st birthday. If I can do it you can too!! Good luck!! Post pictures when your done.
