Does anyone have any tips they can share on how to effectively use these? The ones I have are in the shape of a "ruler" with the letters on the underside. (I hope this makes sense). I don't have any instructions and thought the concept would be fairly simple. Boy was I wrong! These things drove me crazy!!! When I would press into the fondant I would end up with the entire impression of the "ruler" along with other letters I didn't need.
Then I tried it individually and it didn't work either because it picked up all the other parts of the "ruler" in my letter.
I'm not sure if I'm pressing too hard or what.
Please help if you can!
Thanks.
Here's the link but it doesn't show the actual way the "press/tappit" is designed. http://www.globalsugarart.com/catalog/product_16675_FMM_Alphabet_Set_Script_Upper_Case.html
are they attached to the "ruler" or can you use them seperate. I have the wilton letters that came with the "ruler" guide and I stopped using it because it would imprint the guide. Now I use a regular ruler and lay it flat on the cake and make the impression above it that way there is no line. HTH
step #1 roll out fondant or gumpaste very thinly
#2 Dust fondant or gumpaste with corn starch (VERY IMPORTANT)
#3 Press the cutter down and rub over the letter you want backwards and forwards and side to side while pushing down....you should feel the fondant kind of release.
#4 Hold the cutter on the edge of the counter near the letter you're trying to pop out and tap on counter. It should pop out.
It took me a few times to figure it out....but the dusting with cornstarch is probably most important part.

I love these cutters. As April said, roll very thin (I use my pasta roller on number 5). Roll the paste into thin strips or just cut into strips about the width of your cutter and cover "excess" in plastic while you work - you can't really prevent getting bits of the letters on either side. Corn starch or sugar on cutting surface - paste should move freely on cutting surface. Press cutter into paste and move it around to insure a clean cut. FMM calls them "tappits" because you're supposed to be able to tap the letter out of the cutter, but it rarely works that way for me. Use a corsage pin to gently pop the letters out by just barely catching a bit of the paste at an angle. The letters should release easily unless your paste is too thick or too "wet". I live in extremely high humidity, so I usually let my gumpaste dry a bit before cutting. I have no luck cutting fondant with these cutters, BTW - too soft. This is my interpretation of the way Nichola Lodge does it. He is sooooo smooth, but it works for me as well.
