Okay, I have been trying to paint with my luster dust and it won't work. What am I doing wrong. I have been mixing it with Lemon extract, but it won't seem to dry. They color mixes up nicely, but when I go to paint, it just brushes off. Am I using too much extract? Do I paint with the extract first then go over with the powder? I thought Luster dust would be cool and fun to have, but now I'm thinking not.

You could try mixing it with alcohol and see if that helps... It also has to be the right consistency..If it's too thin it won't cover good and if it's too think it gets lumpy and doesn't go on smoothly. I either brush it on dry or airbrush it.
If you get frustrated just brush it on dry... It will give it a nice shimmer. I actually prefer to use it dry on my bows.
I think I do add too much extract. You know I have tried painting it with alcohol in the past and I did have better luck, however the alcohol evaporated so fast. I went through tons of luster dust.
By the way TamiAZ, how do you airbrush it on? Sounds cool.
Also noticed, that you are a ARIZONA-IAN just like me! Wouldn't it be funny if we were neighbors.
Hey, I didn't even notice you were from AZ...Shows how much I pay attention to...LOL!! I'm in the east valley. There are quite a few people from AZ on this board!! ![]()
When I use the airbrush I use a lot of alcohol so it doesn't clog my airbrush..I usually put on several coats for that reason. It's a lot quicker than brushing each loop. I usually put the bow together and then spray it.
I painted Royal Icing roses and leaves with Luster Dust mixed with Lemon Extract. It worked great! Just had to wait for it to dry.

Hi,
I did a cake with acanthus leaves (gumpaste with tylose) in ivory colour, and i wanted to highlight these with Gold lustre dust.
First, using clear alcohol, I dampened the areas I wanted to highlight. ( I found that if the gumpaste itself was too dry, the lustre dust does not stay on).
Then I mixed the lustre dust, with alcohol(I used vodka), and brushed on the highlights with a thin paintbrush. It actually looked much better once it dried.
This is what worked for me. I hope it is of some help to you.
I have attached a picture of the leaves.
