What is required - a license for baking at home or not? I know there have been other threads about this - but I have never seen the answer to my question. In Illinois do you need a license to make cakes at home and sell? I have been told to check out the state website from the health department - so confusing!!!!! I have been told that as long as you do not advertise that you can make and sell. If someone calls you its okay - but no business cards, ads in newspapers, flyers, etc. What about if you want to make a cake and donate it - to a church for a bake sale, to a charity for a silent auction, etc.? Can anyone help me?!?!?! icon_confused.gif

As long as you are not advertising, I think it is fine. Charity donations are OK without ads or cards.

Call your Health department and ask them exactly what is expected of you. It varies so much from state to state.

Home bakeries are not legal in Illinois. Many people do sell illegally. However, I don't know what the penalties are if you are caught. The rules vary from state to state.
