I'm so FRUSTRATED!!! I live in Ohio which licenses home bakeries. Took the plunge and scheduled an inspection about 3 wks ago. The inspector was supposed to come Fri morning at 7:45. It had been a BAD week. Everyone has had the flu, but I worked like a crazy woman to have everything spic and span. My husband took the morning off to keep the kids occupied so I could be undistracted during the inspection. Well, by 9am the guy hasn't shown up or called
, so I called the Dept of Agriculture and they page him. He calls me immediately and says "I guess I owe you an apology," makes some excuses and wants to reschedule. I was so irritated. But maintained control and just said I'd schedule later. Should I make a complaint or just let it go? No one seems to care about customer service anymore! How did he forget a meeting/insection that he scheduled?
I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with the PP that you should give him the benefit of the doubt, and consider yourself blessed that he didn't show up when the kids were suppose to be in school or something of that sort...
We all make mistakes, we all at some point forget a meeting that we had scheduled on a certain day and time. If it happens four times, THEN, yea, maybe a complaint is possibly in order, but as the PP mentioned, you don't want to start off on the wrong foot with your inspector... ![]()

Nice inspector... can I kiss your feet, give you my first born maybe?? ![]()

Just let it slide and be willing to work with them on the rescheduling..
I would be frustrated too! I know how it is to take the time to have everything be perfect, make plans, have hubby take the day off etc., and then have the plans cancelled. Totally ruins my day, my mood, etc. I'm very high strung and anxious, and I would go nuts just waiting for the guy to show up, so I know how you must have felt when he didn't show! I think I probably would have been sick to my stomach! LOL!
I guess we have no choice but to reschedule and be nice...but no cake for him!
Speaking as someone who works for the state she lives in - you need to complain. A lot of the time no one knows what inspectors are really doing. Now, mine are electric ones and usually not too bad at showing up or doing their jobs - but complaints are the only way we know if something's wrong. I would call and complain first thing Monday morning.
And it's not necessarily that people don't care about customer service - I'm currently doing the jobs of three people. A lot of places are just plain overworked and they genuinely can't get to everything. Just my thoughts - hope it helps.
I'm really not a complainer; this was just such an inconvience. I know we all make mistakes. But it seems to me if it's your job to schedule inspections you'd keep up with what you've got scehduled and when. I'm not in the city, so the inspector scheduled the appt for a time when he would be in the general vicinity doing another inspection. So I'm guessing he didn't do that inspection either.
Oh well. I don't need to be in a hurry to licensed (luckily), so I'll just wait and reshedule later. The gentleman did give me his direct number to call and schedule next time so that I don't have to wait for the Dept of Agriculture to contact him and then for him to contact me.
I appreciate the insight.

I think our inspectors here do a great job with everything and like you said, electric about doing their jobs
.. I know I had to cancel my first inspection and I was terrified of rescheduling it because of fear that I'd PO'd my inspector (can't remember what it was that came up, but I think it was DH didn't want to babysit DD so I could go in the days before and give everything a once-over, which I do anytime I'm going to be baking)... Of course, when she came out both times she was incredibly fair with her evaluations and helpful on answering the questions that I had so I would be doing things how the state wants (better to ask than assume).
I honestly was TERRIFIED of the inspector coming out, but I had to keep reminding myself "There's no need to be afraid of the inspector if you aren't doing anything wrong and your standard of operation and procedures meets or exceeds their standards as set by the state"... Once I reminded myself of that, it made the inspections so much easier because the inspector flat out isn't there to "get you", they need to find something for you to improve on so their supervisors know they're doing their jobs, and anything that they're going to recommend improving on are usually things you already know need to be done, but you needed a little motivation to do them ![]()
..
Of course, it helped that for about a month before my first inspection I made reading the state's food service laws my "leisurely reading" ![]()
