Alright, this was a huge discussion in my Wilton class. Are the shimmer/lust/sparkle/peral dusts edible? The cake supply store here is telling us no. My teacher told us she's used it for years with no problems, but that she had heard they weren't edible. Just curious I guess. Most of the time you won't use it on something you would eat on the cake anyway, but just incase it happens.

Also, I'm having a heck of a time uploading my pictures to this website. Anyone else have problems before. It keeps erroring me out every time I try. Any suggestions. I'm new here and a new cake decorator icon_rolleyes.gif

For what I know, they are NON TOXIC, you can eat them, nothing will happen to you BUT it is not recommended, it is for decoration purposes. Same as dragees, I grew up eating them in cookies, I´m almost 30 and alive! JMO.

Wilton shimmer dust IS edible--it is ground up cake sparkles.

Luster, petal, pearl, sparkle, pixie, disco, etc. are non-toxic as nefgaby explained. The amount one person would eat on a cake at a time is minuscule. I always equate it to the crayons you ate as a child. Many of the "big" cake decorators use it all the time.

It's non-toxic, but from the guv-mint's standpoint, it contains no food products and therefore is deemed "inedible." It's like they don't know what to do with something that is neither here nor there. They've got to put it in a box, so they choose inedible. But, it won't hurt you if you eat it, either.
