has anyone on here ever used the red velvet cake mix? i was wondering if it is in any way comparable to scratch red velvet. i have someone wanting a red velvet cake, but i am really pressed for time. thanks gina
another silly question...i've never seen a red velvet sheet cake. why? will a from scratch recipe bake up right as a sheet cake(9x13)?

There is a recipe on the site for one using a yellow cake mix that is excellent. I use it all the time and always have rave reviews on it.

I have used the box red velvet several times before and it's ok - turned out really moist. I just like the "from scratch" red velvet better.

Here's the recipe i always use for red velvet cake.

BUT! There are some changes that you'll find all over the comments that make it good. DO NOT follow the ingredients amounts exactly or you'll get a bad cake. The changes made to the recipe are :
Doubled the cocoa
Increased sugar to 2 cups
use 1 cup of oil in place of shortening
Increased vanilla to 1 1/2 tsp.
Increased vinegar to 1 tbsp
If you use the changes made its the absolute best red velvet cake i've ever had. Please let me knwo hwo it goes for you if you use it! ![]()
