Diamond Candy? Please Tell Me It Is Out There

Hi!
Yesterday I was at hobby lobby and they did have some molds for gem shaped candy. It is in the section where you find the cake decorating things but is with the hard candy making supplies. It could however be used for molding chocolate or jelly candy.
The only other thing I can think of for you to do is look for some other hard candy...maybe rock candy that could pass for a jewel. I know that Party City has a large variety of assorted candies.
Hope this helps you some. ![]()

Crystal & Sanding Sugar
This sugar is sweet, sassy and highly decorative. You will use it for sprinkling on cookies or coating ornaments. Sparkling sanding sugar glistens like diamonds. Because of its sparkle, the sanding sugar makes beautiful sugar molded items and may be colored to any shade desired. Sanding sugar is larger than regular granulated, and the crystal sugar is about 1/16".
49549 Fine Sanding Sugar, 4 oz. $ 1.99
30414 Fine Sanding Sugar, 2 lb. 3.15
65439 Coarse Sanding Sugar, 4 oz. 1.99
73776 Coarse Sanding Sugar, 16 oz. 4.99
45284 Crystal Sugar, 4 oz. 1.99
30406 Crystal Sugar, 1 lb. 2.99

Briansbaker, the "rockcandy" that's refered to on the www.sugarindia.com website can be purchased at any local Indian/Pakistani grocery store....usually the larger cities in the U.S./Canada will have at least one or two of those tucked in the corner of the city somewhere. But if you go there, ask the employee to show you in the direction of rock candy packets...they're usually around $2-4 a packet depending on the size...about a cup or more in quantity....just don't distracted by the rows and rows of spice packets around it!! ![]()
This is a great help thanks. I need to do a 40th anniversary cake and it may have rubies on it as that is a traditional 40th gift. Have any of you made gems like this? Can you tell me how difficult it is. or if you have any tips for success? THanks
Susan
Hi I have the Lindy Smith party animal cakes and it has directions for making sugar crystals shown below.
500ml distilled water
pan
600-750g granulated sugar
1 tall empty glass
string
paper clip
skewer/dowel
Boil water in pan. Turn heat off, gradually add sugar to hot water a spoonful at a time, stir well after each addition. keep adding until no more sugar will dissolve if necessary heat to make clear.
cool sightly then poor into jar allow to cool till room temperature.
Cut string to height of the jar attach one end to dowel put paper clip on other end. Moisten string with water and seed with sugar. Rub sugar along string allow to dry.
Carefully lower into jar so the paper clip is on bottom of jar and the skewer sits ontop of jar.
Leave undisturbed for several weeks or months. You should see crystals growing within 2-5 days although it may take longer.
After a while the crystals will stop growing so if you want larger ones. remove string and separate crystals they should separate easily. cut new piece string and moisten string place a few crystals on string and let dry.
Reheat sugar solution add more sugar as before until solution is saturated allow to coll then lower string in to mix allow to grow.
You could colour the sugar solution with edible colour to create coloured crystals.
I am really looking for a recipe for pouring in a mold to harden. Getting a crystal mold and pouring in a liquid that would harden to look like a crystal. Is that a better way to put it? Thanks though.
I made some amethysts this summer. MAJOR PAIN!!!! The whole saga, complete with pictures and final outcome, can be found in the candy and sugar section of the forum with the title "What Causes This?" Don't know if this link will work, since it's obviously going to have to wrap, but here goes:
