Is it necessary for the fondant on the cake board to dry before placing a cake on it? I have a cake I am doing today for my SIL birthday and I decided at the last minute to do a fondant covered board. But I am not sure if it the board has to dry before putting the cake on it. TIA!!!

Im not sure, if I do a fondant covered board i place a stip of fondant around the cake, so that i don't waste so much under the cake.

Aine2 made a tutorial on how to cover a cake board this way, this was the thread posted about this:

This is the direct link to the tutorial:

it is best to do it a day in advance, BUT as long as you give it a couple of hours to set up you will be fine. i have done it that way several times. in case you have long fingernails, trim them well before you do the cake and be careful when placing the cake on top so you wont be marking it up as easily.

I"ve only done it once, but I did it pretty far in advance (several days) and let it sit. Seems it would be OK to do it sooner though...Let us know how it turns out.

I was advised to cover the whole board in fondant then cut out the circle from the centre on which your cake will sit - if the cake sits on fondant the fondnt goes soggy and nasty underneath the cake. The easiest way to cut out the exact shape is to cut around the tin you used to bake the bottom layer in.

Those are some great ideas, thanks for the links. I never thought to cut out the middle of the board.
Thanks!!!

I cover the cake & board all in one go and cut off excess fondant from the board.Nothing underneath the cake.
