hey everyone,
I'm new at this and I baked a round cake, but I was wondering if there was any special technique to make the top of the cake flat?? Thanks so much in advance!!
You can level it, meaning to cut off the humped up part, either with a leveler, or with a knife. (I always get it crooked when I use a knife, though...)
Also, as soon as it comes out of the oven, you can press it down with a clean tea towel. This will also make the cake denser.
Flip the cake over so that the bottom of the cake becomes the top - should be totally flat then.
I use the baking strips (sometimes), when I don't and I have the "dome" I do just as Jen said, gently with a clean dish towel press/pat down the dome.

I do the same thing, but I also still level the hump so it lays flat. But flipping it and using the bottom for the top keeps the darn crumbs outta the icing=) Jen

Besides.....if it's got a hump of any size, just flipping it over will cause the cake to break as the corners react to gravity and starting pulling down because there's nothing under those corners to support them.
