How Do I Disassemble A Whimsical Cake?

My niece is turning 18 next month. I want to do a really neat whimsy cake for her. It will be buttercream though, not fondant, as no one in my family will eat the stuff. How would I go about separating the cake once its been presented to her? How would I get the top cake out of the second to top cake without getting my hands all over it?
If anyone has a good idea or tip, please let me know!! Thanks!
I made one using the instructions from this site. It was a 6", 9", 12" and all buttercream. I didn't separate the layers before cutting, I just cut straight from the cake starting with the top layer. I cut the 6" in half with the tall side as one half and the smaller side as the other half and then sliced from it. Once you get the first slice out, it's pretty easy to figure out where to put the cake knife next. For the 9" I sliced across a third of the cake and took slices from that and so on.
I hope that explanation helps.
same here. My nieces 18th is being held at her fave restaurant and I can't be too messy. I'm glad my question can help you also. Good luck with your cake!!
