I have a baptism cake to do and was thinking of using fondant for the decorations. I bought a box a while back, I can't find an expiration date or best if used by date on it. Does anyone know what the shelf life is. I just opened it and pinched alittle to taste it. I've never used fondant or have ever taseted it. It actually tasted awful. Is it supposed to have an after taste? Are fondant decorations supposed to be eaten?

As far as I know, the shelf life is pretty long for fondant. And yep, taste like crap to me too...you should make your own MMF (marshmallow fondant). There is a recipe on this website. I just made it for the first time for a wedding cake and it looked beautiful and tasted good. Its just marshmallows, powdered sugar and vanilla. Fondant decorations can be eaten but are usually not. But really, try makin' the mmf...its much better than store bought!

Hi QueLinda,

Welcome to Cake Central.

For as I know, fondant will hold up along time.

I agree with Wendoger, MMF is better to use and taste pretty good. For making decorations with MMF, just add some Fixodent to it to make it harden up.

Catch me up on this fixodent trick - how much do you use?

What brand fondant is it??? I use Satin Ice fondant. On the one that I buy it says the shelf like is 3 months.

I know that the wilton fondant tastes terrible and gets really dry and hard when it is old. I do not like wilton fondant and recently was going to make some decorations out of some that I had for a while...but it was too dry so I trashed it! icon_smile.gif

1 tsp powdered fixodent to a wad of MMF the size of a baseball. Use a little crisco if it gets a bit dry. Use it just like gumpaste.

I have Wilton Fondant. I am going to give the MMF a shot. So how will I store the left over's and how long will MMF keep?

Wrap MMF tightly and keep air out, even put it in a container after it's wrapped. It should keep for quite some time. If you use it again, say in a couple of weeks and it seems a little hard, put it in the microwave for about 10 - 15 seconds, that will help soften it up.
