Hey guys! I need some help. I am looking for a "WOW" cake recipe. I do not own a business, and I only decorate for family and friends. I am not looking for something to help turn a profit--I am only looking for a cake recipe that is totally WOW. I love to cook for people--church, work, etc.-- and lately, i think I am relying on my comfort cakes. Any good recipes you could throw my way would be really, really appreciated. thumbs_up.gif

Have you tried Dub's Dreamcycle? I got wows on that one. What about cake balls, those have been wildly popular and you can play with the flavor so much it is cool. I have a few WOW combos for the cake balls if you are interested.

You didn't say if you preferred scratch, mix or doctored.

But everyone on CC loves the White Almond Sour Cream Cake:

And the Darn Good Chocolate Cake is popular:

You might want to experiement with hi-ratio shortening also. (I LOVE hi-ratio, ask anyone.)

Super (multi-linked) thread on fillings, frosting, more):

Quick question. If you use hi ratio shortening in a cake recipe do you use the same amount as you would if you were using crisco?

Thanks for all of the replies--I am going to try the white almond cake--I hear it is good. What I really, really need is a good tasting competition cake. Not a decorated cake--but a cake that can compete in a small town competition. The classic red velvet and carrot cakes just won't cut it. I live in a small town--and I need to be able to compete in our annual cake competition. No money up for grabs--but a year's bragging rights will be totally worth all of the work. Any ideas??????????

I'm not sure what you're looking for, but I've always gotten good reviews for my death by chocolate cake. With the chocolate frosting recipe I have you can smell the chocolate from several feet away.
