I am doing a Lightning McQueen Pan on top of a sheet cake.... I would like to make the sheet cake like a checkered flag... I dont' want to use fondant or mmf.... so I thought now would be a prime chance to use my airbrush.... do you all think this would work, and also should I cut out the checkered pattern and lay it over the white icing and only airbrush black? Any thoughts or suggestions would be WONDERFUL.. thanks!

We did a checkered pattern on the Dale Earnhardt cake in my pics. I made a template and placed it on the cake and airbrushed the red and let it dry and then placed the template back on and did the black. I had to keep moving the template as we did it since I didn't make one large enough. I would only airbrush the black and leave the white.

jo_ann, thanks for the reply and I love your cake... so tell me what did you use for your stencil, paper, or plastic.... this will be my 1st attempt at using my AB so any suggestions would be good.. I plan to practice on papertowels beforehand... but... when it comes to the cake, do I lay the stencil on it and then airbrush or just hold it close? Thanks!

I used a piece of cardstock to cut out squares for a checkerboard pattern, cut it with exacto knife. laid on on top of crusted buttercream and airbrushed. I am veryyyyyyy new to airbrushing and am having problems with spitting and splattering. some of the black did get on sides of the cake, so I would recommend using a mask just in case your airbrush behaves as badly as mine. I used this on a 50's cake for my son, in the gallery if you want to see.

hellieoh.... thanks for the advice... I looked in the gallery and love your work.. on your cars cake is the checkerboard pattern on the side also chocolate transfers? This is my idea for the cake I am trying to do, except all around the sides, so I thought airbrushing would work.... my cars pan is the actual wilton one going on top of the cake, so the only checkerboard pattern to be seen will probably be the sides. any suggestions?

The checkerboard on the cars cake is black and white fondant. I didn't have my airbrush when I did that. I would recommend the airbrush for your sides, just make a template out of some cardboard the length of the longest side of the cake, with appropriate size squares (if cake was 2" high, I would do 1"squares) I also would make the template top about an inch higher so it will catch any overspray. Why I would recommend the airbrush is because it is so quick, bam bam and it is done, unlike cutting and placing fondant, or hand painting the squares. Best of luck on what you decide to do....can't wait to see your cake thumbs_up.gif

i bought mylar from Joanns fabrics. It's in the quilting section. It works great. It's what I use for all my stencils because I can buy a decent size sheet of it and it's not expensive.
