She's got the only attitude. She barely teaches anything. She basically just reads the book to you. icon_evil.gif Then, she'll just say "u need to redo those flowers" or "u need to make those (whatever) much smaller, look at those." and points to another classmates. I feel so lost in that class. She is the same instructor I took course 1&2 with. I feel like the only reason I know what I know is from trial and error, more than her "instruction". I have 2 more classes to go, she also changed the day and time of the class, and I feel like quitting. I don't know if I should just go somewhere else where they might actually "teach" me something or just wing it and get the certificate, and learn the rest of what I need to know here. What r ur opinions? icon_confused.gif

I would go somewhere else. I would also make sure that I talked to Wilton about it. You shouldn't have to pay for something that doesn't teach you anything. If she wants to be a teacher, then she needs to teach. I hate people who act like they are too good or too busy to do what they are getting paid to do.

I'm so sorry that has happened to you. I'm sure it is really frustrating! I would feel very humiliated if the instructor were belittling me, especially in front of the class. I was very fortunate to have a terrific patient instructor, as I think most are.

I don't know if you can get your money back and go to another, but I sure would...just make sure the instructor is not the same. I'm sure some of the WIs here will answer and let you know what to do. Don't give up. You CAN learn on here, but techniques of flowers and other important lessons are easier when learned in class.

Good luck!

You're paying for the lessons in order to get actual instruction. Not only go somewhere else, but tell the place where you're taking lessons now about her "instruction style". There was another thread on here recently where someone quit their Wilton class due to an instructor. Seems perhaps there needs to be quality control and the students are the best way to make sure good instructors remain in the business and bad instructors are given the opportunity to find a career for which they are better suited.

is there another store near by where you can finish your classes? i wouldn't want to go back, but if its the only store you also don't want to miss the opportunity to practice at least and have fun with other cakers. maybe you should also mention her to the store manager.

And write to Wilton, and be specific. That is NOT how WMI's are trained and not how they are to teach. Also tell the store manager and tell them you want a refund. That will get them listening. If you enjoy the decorating itself, don't quit. The decorating is a lot of fun, you just got a dud for a teacher. Stay with it -- we'll help you!! icon_biggrin.gif

imnamor95, I'm so sorry!! I wish you lived close to me and I'd teach/instruct you to correct what this instructor is obviously lacking and doing wrong!! ... I've had several of my students that went to another arts/craft store in my area and have taken lessons... when they came to my classes, they were all so frustrated with the other instructor too .. many have came and taken the classes over with me and continue on to take all other courses available with me too... I work with each student individually to make sure they know and understand each technique .. when they're doing something wrong, I quietly lean in and tell them to try holding the bag down/up or correct the angle of their hand to make sure they get it right ... I feel so bad for you!! Please let the store manager know that you're not happy with the instruction you're getting .. there's no way to correct it if they're not aware there is a problem ... it's wrong to just sit and read a book to you .. I follow the book, but I rarely read straight from it ... I find that to be boring and I don't want students falling asleep on me lol .. so please mention this to store manager so they can correct the instructor and make her change her method of teaching or get another instructor!!

I'm a WMI and PLEASE notify the store manager AND WILTON! Wilton actually does the hiring of the instructors (and I believe firing as well). So you really need to go to WILTON.COM to complain, otherwise the instructor will continue to teach and there will just be unhappy students. In my class I follow the book but try and pack in 14 years of cake experience into a 4 week class!!! We have fun, eat, share recipes, laugh, joke around about the Tip 12 hearts (shaped like......). I do this as a hobby and not to pay bills so it's not a "job" it's just fun to teach my talent to the students.... I wish you were in VA Beach you could come take my classes!!!! Good luck, and I recommend switching store's and getting your money back, but not without telling the store manager (NOT THE CASHIERS!!!) AND TELL WILTON!!!!!

gingersoave, where in VA Beach do you teach? My sister lives near there and is looking for a class to join. I got her hooked on cake decorating when she came to visit and attended a Course 1 class with me.

I'm sorry that happened to you as well. I'm actually in the process of looking for a class to start with. I live in Raleigh, NC, so if anyone can point me in the right direction that would be appreciated.
I agree that you should take this situation to the individual Store Manager as well as Wilton. If you don't than this teacher will continue to frustrate other paying customers who are there to learn something and not just be criticized everytime they are trying to learn a new technique.

Have you said anything to her? Does she treat the rest of the class this way? And did she do that through 1 & 2?

Sounds like call to Wilton and look for another class to attend. So far I am on my second instructor and we have our 2nd class tomorrow, she seems alright so far. I hope things work out for ya.

ntertayneme - you sound just like my instructer. had to take a quick look and see if you where in my area.. I'm on my 2nd class of course 2. My instructer is absolutely the best. I even went down last night (as she teaches a class everynight) and talked to her about a cupcake cake I had to do, and she gave me all the information I needed and more.
Do as everyone has suggested, complain to the manager and write Wilton.
Keep with it though, it's just to much fun!!! when you have a great instructer. icon_biggrin.gif

I feel really bad for you. Go someplace else. My instructor was like that. I've learned more on my own than I ever did from her. I couldn't complain to anyone because she owned the business.

lol idoweddingcookies icon_smile.gif I even give them my telephone number so if they get stuck on something and they can't quite work out how to do it or remember how they were taught to do it, they can call me.. I've had many students that have followed through all my classes and when they've moved up to another challenge, they'll call me to ask my advise on how to do something .. I love doing it and answering their questions.. we're in this profession because we love it .. it's surely not for the money lol .. and to me, this instructor needs to be reported as gingersoave stated.. the manager of the store needs to also be made aware otherwise, nothing gets corrected.

I had the same problem with mine. She never thought us anything we are suppose to get hands on THAT'S WHY WE TAKE CAKES!!!! And she would do it all herself then put it on a finshed cake and say see how I did it. I was like okay I saw how you did it but I want to learn how to do it. All she would do is talk about how many cakes she has done and showed the class all the wedding cakes she gets paid for and talk bad and gossip about the brides and grooms.....frustrating!!!!!! So I told the manager...guess what...turns out her and the manager are buddies!!!! And she would show off how she got an award from Wilton as a best teacher....I was like whaaaaaat!!!! Shouldn't teachers teach and not withhold info!! Oh well that's why I hit the books...haha!! Good luck I wish you the best!!!!!

I wouldn't quite but I would defiantly go some where else or to a different instructor! I feel bad for u... icon_sad.gif I would also demand my $$$$ back. You should get what u paid for and you're not.... It doesn't seem like she really wants to do her job, if she doesn't fine she shouldn't be there.

I would see if there was another place that you could take the classes at or another instructor at the store. the one important thing to remember is that you paid YOUR money for these classes and there for deserve the best. DEMAND the better treatment. talk to the store and wilton like others have suggested. Also remember that you and the instructor are both adults. So after class one everyone else is gone talk to her about what is going on. also make her aware of what you plan to do, be that talk to the store, wilton. this instructor may never have had any complaints and may thinnk that her style is good for all. so talk to her and see what comes from it. let her know that you would like a better relationship in the classroom, especially since you will be taking the other classes from her.

hope all works out for you!

I'm sorry that you have to deal with this...as I did!! I stuck with it though because of my love for cake decorating. It's up to you...if you really love it, just stick with it. I have learned more from here and other online places than the classes! At least you do get the books and get to go out and practice I guess!

Be sure to mention your problems with the instructor to the store you're taking classes at. I'd kindly discuss the matter with the store manager... they need to know there are issues and should appreciate feedback.

I had one Wilton instructor I liked and one I liked as a person, but not as an instructor. I'm blessed to live in an area with several stores, so I just moved to another part of town and picked up classes where I'd left off.

Silvercat, what happened with your class?

It's funny, cake decorating classes can be a blast and incredibly informative and instructional or they can be a complete waste of money and time. It's all about the instructor! I really hope those of you with problemed classes will be able to find another!

OMG
ntertayneme, are you sure your not my instructer. ROFLMAO ..Mine gave us her card, with home & cell number as well as her email address. Before i signed up for #2 i made sure she was still going to be the instructor.. signed up for #3 and the fondant and gumpaste next, as she is teaching all the classes!
Sure glad to hear there are more instructors out there like mine.
Cheers to all of you great Wilton instructors thumbs_up.gif and a big thumbsdown.gif to those that need to get out of the industry if they don't want to teach!!

I don't know what to think. It's like if she caters to the people that learn the quickest. I need a little more help, maybe I'm dumb. Some people r natural at this, I am not. I have to learn and then, practice alot to do what I do. I am also a perfectionist. I know that once I learn how to do something right, I am great at it, not the best but, pretty good. Yeah, she's pretty much been the same throughout the other courses, it's just that I think I feel it more here bc it's such an advanced class. I decided that I am gonna try and stick it out and just get the certificate, what the heck... icon_rolleyes.gif , ugh. I wish I didn't feel this way. I see and hear so many great things about other instructors, I wish I had a great one too. Anyway, she is supposedly only doing weekend classes now bc she's got another day job. So, supposedly the store is gonna get another instructor for during the week but, I don't feel like waiting for that to happen. I might just speak with the mgr after I finish the course. Let me see how I come out of this, lol.
Oh, another thing is she SWEARS she is the ultimate authority on cake decorating and I've seen her work, she ain't all that, lol. Then, she told us that the reason she got another job is bc "this cake business doesn't pay", not the class instructing, she was talking about working in a bakery!! I'm thinking, with the prices she was charging, she thought just TOO DARNED MUCH of herself, and people were prob like "no way, jose, I'd rather go to Costco!", lol.
Anyway, thx for ur input! I appreciate it! icon_smile.gif

Dont quit, complain! Tell the manager you want your money back and complain to wilton. When I took my first class it was fun, the instructor was kind of dry and a little short but we had fun. The second course we got a sub instructor and she couldnt understand why we were having trouble with the consistency of the buttercream. It came out that we had never been shown how to make icing let alone how to achieve the different consistencies because our instructor never brought any in. As this instructor was from another store, she kindly offered to let us sit in on course one with her at no charge. There are good instructors out there, so don't give up!
