If I was planning on eating some of the cake, I would make candy clay roses. I love chocolate and they look pretty lifelike to me. I made some with the Valentine's Teddy Bear I made for my DH. I posted it in my photos. I ended up eating most of the roses.
Fondant and Gumpaste make beautiful roses that are very lifelike but they are more for show.
I personally prefer gumpaste, especially if I knew the recepient wanted a keepsake. However, if you think that everyone would want a piece of cake with a flower, I would use buttercream or candy clay.
I prefer the look of gum paste myself but quite frankly, cannot fathom putting the time into making them! My hat is off to you gals that do!!! It really is a time-consuming art form.
I do a pretty good buttercream rose. Used to do royal ones but who wants to eat a royal one? The only situation I'd consider doing a royal rose is if I wanted to cascade them down the side of a cake.
i like buttercream- i can whip those out pretty quick- and i don't have toworry about people eating them- i freeze mine before i place them on the cake so i don't smoosh them, and i can move them around a little- have to work fast, they start to thaw pretty quick. i've been practicing fondant, but i'm sooo slow, and mine look so fake. i do like the fondant ribbon roses- quick and cute
