I am going ATTEMPT to make this cake, http://cakecentral.com/cake-photo-34560.html I've tried to pm her but I don't think she has been on here for awhile, so I know you guys can help me!!
I'm really scared to try this but it's for my grandpa's b-day, whom I adore, so I want it to be as perfect as possible. Questions- Do you think she just used stacked rounds and cut the back off?
I'm trying to figure out if I should use the typical "basketweave" tip or try to figure out what tip she used?
Do you think the trim around the basket is buttercream or fondant?
One more thing, do you think that color would look better than if I used chocolate buttercream? What color do you think she used to get that color?
Thank you guys sooo much, I would greatly appreciate any help I can get!![/u]
She probably did cut a round to make it look that way, just guessing! I can't tell about the basket, but you could probably get the same effect with a large circle top or by rolling fondant. The color, well it looks like a mix between a brown and an ivory. I have found wilton ivory at michaels, and then maybe add a touch of brown and work up from there. If you want the wheat colored look I wouldn't use Chocolate BC, would be too dark, but for the straps and stuff, you could do frozen chocolote bc or brown tinted fondant... are you doing the fish too? My guess would be he is airbrushed, could be wrong though, either way, it is a very nice looking cake, good luck with your version, I am sure you will do just fine!
Sugarbakerz, no, I'm not doing the fish. I decided that I won't do the chocolate buttercream. I think it would look fine being darker but I like how this one looks.
Lalana, Oh no!!! That bites having so much MMF, I've never made it but I'm sure that was alot of work!!
Thank you both!
How many rounds do you think I should stack?
Also, I'm thinking for the straps to either do Chocolate Molding Clay or Chocolate MMF, I've never made either. Which do you think would work better?
Thanks guys!
I looks to me like a #5 or possibly a #7 plain piping tip for the basketweave. I would make white buttercream and if you have any chocolate butterceam made up, add it a little at a time until you get that wicker color. Or, you could do it in white and then airbrush it. I would say fondant straps or maybe chocolate clay. The edging or tube shape looks like it was piped with about a #12 tip. I would use round cakes and just cut one end off square. It doesn't appear that the lid of the creel is a separate piece, so I think she just piped the basketweave on the top and then added that edging.
I agree with Shirley! That does look like just a plain round tip just used to do the basketweave pattern. That is a cool cake!! Thanks for sharing and I'm gonna try that for Father's Day I think. Just went in the favs! Make sure you remember what you do Flav.....I'm sure I'll be pming you when June gets here!!!!
Thank you so much Shirley! I just finished baking them so tomorrow I start the decorating, so I feel better now that I have a "plan". I also made the flies tonight. I thought I'd skatter them around the basket. I'm so nervous to do this, hopefully it'll turn out alright!
Thank you too Michelle! I was wondering if you were going to find my post to help me again!
If mine turns out, I would LOVE to help you if you decide to do it!!
I made the chocolate clay and it didn't turn out.
So I think I'll just color some fondant brown. (for the straps)
Wish me luck guys!!!
OK, guys. I finished. I had SUCH a hard time with it. After I finished the basketweave, I set it aside to start my grandma's cake, look back at this one and a big back corner and all the iciing on the back fell off!!! I almost cried. I had to cut straight from where it broke so it wasn't the shape I had started with. Then I couldn't get the color of the trim right, it ended up looking like poo, even a couple of my cousins said so at the party!! ![]()
Then when I was doing my grandma's cake, well first of all, I was up till eleven on fri. night baking both cakes, which ended up to be 7 pans in all. I get to the last pan, pick it up to put it in the oven and I dropped it!
It went all over the floor. That was WASC and I didn't feel like making another batch of that so I just used a plain white mix, so that cake had 2 different flavors!
All in all the cakes went over pretty well but I see so many flaws in the fishing creel, I was almost too embarressed to post it!
It's probably because I spent soooo much time on it that I expected it to be perfect!
I thank you all for your help, I honestly couldn't have done this cake without you guys!!!!! Thank you sooooo much!!!!!!!!!! I really don't know what I would do without CC!
I love this cake!!! It looks awesome!! Great job!!!! You know I'll be pming you come closer to Father's day!!! LOL!!!
Thanks Shirley, that means alot! It was stressful but seeing how much my grandpa and grandma loved their cakes it was worth it!!
Thanks Michelle! Please feel free to ask me anything, I would love to help!!
