Our school system recently implemented an automated alert system to alert parents of certain situations. I took this to mean that it would be used in case of emergencies, if schools would be closed, etc.
Well tonight I got a call on my cell phone, an automated alert that report cards will be issued tomorrow. Well, thank you, but I knew that because they put it on the school calendar AND announced it on the radio. A few minutes later I get a call on my home phone...same announcement! Then I check my email, guess what, I get the email announcement. This seems like just a touch of overkill. When you get the call, there is an option to confirm that you have indeed received the message. I can't wait to check with DH and see if they called his cell, too.

So... I think maybe report cards are coming out tomorrow. icon_rolleyes.gif Heaven help the child who tries to hide their report card from their parents.

Do they really need to contact you at all those locations? Contact the school, five times, if necessary, and ask them if they can put just your home telephone number on the automated alerts list.

I'm glad they didn't have this feature when I was in school icon_lol.gif

When we moved here a year ago we got a new # which happened to belong to someone with a couple of kids and every other day I got calls about the kids not being in school very annoying when you don't have a kid in school yet icon_rolleyes.gif

I would think that you could request that only one # be called to alert you of certain situations and for the more important emergencies then call all the #'s

I am going to contact them tomorrow and ask them to list only ONE number. This seems like an incredible waste of resources...especially when they're complaining about not having enough money for a playground at the new school they're building!!

Actually I would like to know when report cards come out. I have a teen and I have not seen all his report cards. Because he was sick a couple of times and the office didn't know where his report card was at. I love this system and you can have them only call one or 2 ##. We have had so many bomb threats in the last few years. So I am glad this has been implemented here. But I haven't recieved a message about report cards. For my DD elementary school I have gotten reminder for fundraisers and such. And oh ya they had a bomb threat also. I may have to call the high scool here to recieve notification on the report cards. But we can access the high school kids grades on the schools website. So I like that feature. But it doesn't give there final grade.

All in all, I think it's a good feature. My kids are still young enough to come running in excited about report cards. I was just tickled that I got SO MANY notifications. I think this will be great if school is closing early, etc.
We recently had a situation where most of the area lost power on a very cold day. One of the schools had heat, so made the decision to keep the kids at school after hours. BUT they couldn't reach all the parents. I can't imagine the panic! I'm sure that situation is what made them start this program.

oh gosh my school does that too! phone and email! drives me nuts! PLUS, if I interrupt the message, like yelling over my shoulder to tell hubby it's a stupid school call, then the message starts over! If the message picks up any voices in the background, it starts over! I'm getting to the point that I just hang up once I hear that recorded message start to play. God help me if it's ever a REAL message that I need to hear.

Talk about the boy who cried wolf! ElectronicallY!

OMG! That many calls and an email???

I do think its a good feature because a lot of older children, well...I'll just stop there, but hmm...now I'm wondering when our school system will do that.

Oh well, all in all I guess that is better than seeing a safety pin on the back of your childs shirt with a note on it....I saw one of my friends children come home like this a few years ago, ,lol!

LOL!! The final count is....3 phone calls and one email. I'm not sure if they've contacted my mom and sister, as well, since they are listed as emergency contacts... icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

Wouldn't it be hilarious if something happened to prevent report cards from coming out tomorrow?? icon_lol.gif

We have a system like that but they only call the one number if you push the button to let them know that someone got the call instead of voicemail.
They don't do the email thing.

We have been informed when our child made the honor roll but that's about all they call for other than school closing or being late.

I love it because I dont have to listen to the local radio station, it would be okay if they would hire people that didn't have to struggle to read the word "cancelled" but that gets a little old.

whats funny is that here the high school doesnt want to "publish" when cards come out.... you just get them in the mail..... my two younger boys bring theirs home but not my high schooler...they don't let them.... and they are the ones that said "they are high schoolers they have to learn responsibility" yeah ok... then let them bring home the cards and let the parents know when they are coming like in the calendar....

Our school system mails all report cards and midterms or passes them out at parent/teacher conferences, even the kindergarteners so maybe that's why they don't call to inform. icon_lol.gif

I had too many siblings to hide my report cards, the younger kids would happily bring them home and a B would get us yelled at so when we were older we didn't like the little kids.

Why so many alerts? Seems like one would be enough, unless it TRULY was an emergency. Seems like over kill, but I am not in charge.
