How can I improve the flavor of piping gel? Is it possible? Does adding coloring make it taste worse? I dyed some blue for a cake, and later when I had a slice, YUCK! icon_surprised.gif It was bitter, almost sour. Does the piping gel in the tiny premade tubes taste better? I'm thinking of trying one of the stained glass cakes for a church in the gallery.

Thanks, everybody!

I think it all tastes nasty. What about using crushed candies and melting them for the windows. I did this for the ginderbread house and it looked really cool.

Maybe use blue Kool-Aid? Are there powdered flavorings? I've never eaten piping gel by itself. Do different brands have different flavors? Just some thoughts; I'm not sure I was much help!

Thanks for two great ideas, guys!

If I did the candy, could I still pipe the outline onto buttercream and just kind of "spoon" the candy in? Would it melt the buttercream? Do you think I'd have control of the melted candy?

I also like the idea of the Kool-Aid. I could quickly and easily get lots of colors and maybe improve the taste. Do you think the colors would "bleed" onto the buttercream?

Do you think I'd do better to make the "stained glass" portion on a piece of fondant and then just sort of place it on the cake?

Thanks again. I love the knowledge and willingness to share you guys bring to this site. icon_biggrin.gif

Are you talking about commercial gel? The homemade version just tastes like corn syrup...

Regarding the bleeding.......I don't know, but I've been told that if your BC contains meringue powder, it helps with bleeding. Also, maybe you can put a clear layer of gel down first, then put the colored on top of that. I haven't tried it, though.
