I hate the baking part of cake & cookie decorating! We can't do anything outside since weather is gross right now icon_cry.gif and I just wanted to play wtih some icing without messing up the kitchen. And my wilton practice board just isn't doing it for me. Is it possible to get the florist styrofoam and cover it with something to practice borders or something? I've seen you discussing cake dummies, but I am in a small town and I'll have to order one online. I don't even know what size / shape or where to order one. Until I'm willing to research that, I am hoping I can just make myself one to play with.

What are they made of? Should I use the water holding kind or the cruchy/stiff styrofoam? And will press n seal or contact paper work on it?

Come on! Please don't make me turn on my oven in 99% humidity!

Have you thought about just practicing on the outside of a cake pan? It gives you the general shape of a cake and the icing would be really easy to wipe off.

Covering it in press n seal would also work!

Cake dummies are made from stryofoam. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can be decorated like a real cake and reused.

Cake pans are made of aluminum. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can be decorated like a real cake and reused.

Hope that helps some!! icon_lol.gif

Yeah, I've practiced writing on the back of cookie sheets and top borders on my oval and 8" round pans, but they are only 2" deep . I kept bumping my tip on the pan lip when I tried to do drop strings. But now I have learned I'm not supposed to be letting my tip drop down that low, anyway! Thanks for the reminder. icon_smile.gif

Duh...cake pans...what a good idea! Sometimes I wonder where my brain is. I was trying to think of a good way to practice covering stuff with fondant without wasting fondant and that would do it!

why didn't I think of this??!!??

I have bought the round floral foams from Michael's and stacked them 3 high to decorate. I just left the plastic wrap on them and glued them together and iced...

You could also make one out of rice krispy treats... I've used them to make topsy-turvy dummies. Shape the cereal mixture into the shape you want and decorate.

I made my own cake dummy by using a hot glue gun and styrofoam together. Then I wrap each cake with clear duct tape making sure not to overlap tap to much to prevent creases.

Yep do this too. It is quick to make up a "cake" and have you ever had rice krispies with BC? It has become requested now in my family.
