stack cakes? I mean do you decorate them first and then stack or do you stack and then decorate. I did my first stacked cake last night and I frosted them with buttercream prior to stacking. Then I was at a loss how to get them on top of each other with out messing up the icing. (The picture is in my photo's) Well I managed to get them on top of each other with only minor damage. Can someone give me an easier way to do this?

Your cake turned out really cute. I love the little feet!

I usually decorate first, then stack, then finish decorating. There are certain things that need to be done after stacking (like trim) of course. And I always end up denting my BC during stacking. But I have always been able to fix it or cover up the boo-boo with trim.

Most wedding cakes I stack on site because it's safer to transport an unstacked cake!

I decorate, then stack, then take care doing borders, or anything else like that to hide any finger smudges.

When you add in your supports (dowels or pillars) leave them out a bit so when you set your tiers on top of eachother you can get your fingers out before it settles down. The weight of the cake will push down your supports but give you time to get your hands away. HTH

That is a great idea. I never thought of that.

Thanks

I do exactly like Cakecre8tor does...just leave the dowels sticking out a bit and you will have room to remove your fingers...I was scared stiff the first time I tried it, but it works very well..

Leaving the dowels to stick out a little bit also adds room for the weight of succeeding cakes to compress down without smashing into the lower tiers.

That sounds great. I have been wondering this myself. In addition, I have what is probably a stupid question. How do you unstack the cakes (without damage) when it's time to cut and serve?

by all means use the method where you leave the dowel rods sticking out of your cake.
