I don't have 1M, I'm sure it would be worth the little bit to buy it but meantime, what else is a good tip for cupcakes?

the biggest round or star tip you have should work well. You don't necessarily have to do the big swirl, like a soft serve ice cream cone...why not a smooth top done with a palette knife, or a spiral done with a round tip? Zigzag right across the cupcake from side to side with a star tip...
