I want to attempt some MMF roses, what equipment do I need to buy? I was thinking of the flower cutters. Also what tool is needed to make the petals thin?

Someone was kind enough to post links to the Wilton Tutorial on fondant roses, but although the tutorial says what to do I couldn't figure how to thin the petal out, I was thinking of a spoon?

Appreciate any comment.Thanks.

Hi there
I haven't tried MMF, but i have made fondant roses. What i find is that with fondant, you can't get the petals as thin as you do with gumpaste. If you want very thin petals try gumpaste. For the fondant roses i just thin then out with my fingers, thumb and forefinger, just squeeze around the petal. For gumpaste you will need a dogbone tool, or similar. You need to roll them out very thin to begin with and then thin them further with the tool on a foam petal pad. If you're interested i will find pictures of the tools im referring too.
Cheers and all the best

There is a wilton.. long tool with a ball at the end of it... That is how I fan the petals out. Don't be afraid to press it out really thin... like was the first time. If you really mess up just roll it up and resuse it!

Wilton sells a kit for making fondant/gumpaste roses. I believe it has all the tools you would need. To make the petals thin and curl a little you need a small thin piece of foam and a tool that has what looks like a small ball on the end of it. It is hard to describe - you work the fondant with that tool to thin it out - the part of the petal that is the "open" part of the rose you want a lot thinner than you do the base of it.

I bought the gumpaste flower kit (it ws like $20.) it had everything I needed in it. You can use the 40% off coupon to get it too. I personally liked the seperate rose cutter kit though. (which is of course sold seperately) they also sell the tool kit seperately also.

Nati is right - gumpaste is easier to get the real thin flowers with.

Boonenati and janethorp- Thanks for your responses.

Boonenati, I would appreciate the picts. very much. I wonder if it's the tools that resemble the kids first toothbrush set, the plastic ones?

Hi there
Just found a picture on this website
http://www.apieceofcakethame.co.uk/view_products.aspx?cid=21
it's the third one from the top, named FMM Cranked Ball end (dogbone)

Cheers
Nati
PS: If you use fondant, dont forget to add gum trag or similar to it, you wont be able to get really thin petals from it, but it will be a lot more pliable and easier to work with for making flowers.

I think I have found it, It's called the wiltons confectionery tools set. I also see the Gumpaste flower kit in the catalog. I had seen all these before but just didn't know what it was used for. Thank you all.
