My ds loves to sing, always has. He's only 8, and his voice is changing. OH MY! He has the headphones on, so his singing isn't covered by the music.

How long does it take a boy's voice to finish changing? Aka, how much longer will I need earplugs? I love him, really do, but OH MY!

Oh, and fresh batteries in the cd player, so this will last a few hours. I don't dare say anything to him for fear of hurting his feelings.

Hey Mara,

According to this article, your son will become more proficient with his changing voice if he doesn't use the headphones. (Really, that's what I got out of it!)

yep...he needs to hear himself not the person on the CD (and don't even get me started about what really rotten singers some currently popular ones are!)

my advice -- time to get that boy in choir and even taking some kind of music instrument lessons (keyboard best for future singers)

as one who has been singing in choirs since Kindergarten (!) in Lutheran elem. school -- the more practice the better...and learning to read music, match pitches, etc. was greatly enhanced by taking keyboard lessons (after all -- choirs practice to a piano or organ or electronic keyboard)

doesn't really matter what kind of choir -- church, school, community -- just get him in.

oh, and how about singing together!??! duets can be fun!

Thank you both! The links are helpful. I was shocked that he started changing at 8 (it said youngest recorded is 9), but he's got other signs of puberty as well.

I'll have him plug in the speakers. We've got 3 radios going (we don't have tv, just movies) and they were all competing, so we try to use headphones. If it will help him, we'll all listen to his "music" choices.
