It depends on what you intend to use it for. I use black gel for scroll work , thin borders etc. If I need to use black BC, I start off with dark chocolate BC and add black paste color. The same with Fondant. Start with chocolate Fondant, then add the black. After I have put on the fondant, I go back with a paint brush and add black paste coloring ( kind of a second coat of color, if you will). This adds a nice shine and is totally black. The BC tends to not get to a true black. More like a dark charcoal color. Hope that helps.

some people start w/cocolate icing, but I use vanilla then color it brown first before I add the black.. Seems to work the best for me, and I have people that can't have chocolate icing so coloring brown is the same effect

KopyKake's paste (gel) color will do the trick and it won't taste bad! It darkens as it sits. It is no fail.

Americolor Super Black gel color is the answer - you can get jet black even when you start off with white and it doesn't make it taste bad. Great stuff! (their Super Red is amazing too)

I would suggest using Americolors gel coloring. It is true to color and has no bitter taste to it. Good luck!

I also use Americolor and have no problem getting a true black from white bc icing and it does not affect the taste at all

Americolor is definately the way to go! Super black and Super red work great starting from white BC.

Can royal icing be colored black with the gel paste?

Maybe I just have sensitive taste buds...but I used royal blue and black Americolor to make the borders on my Air Force cake and I couln't stand the taste of it. I didn't have any of the cake so I don't know if it was the same with cake. I swore to never do dark colors again.
