I am doing my sister's wedding cake (fondant), and I am trying to decide on a square cake or round. I've been told that round is easier because there are no corners, but by someone else that square is better. I am going for a simple, contemporary look, and I think square would be prettier. Help!! Oh, I am using Satic Ice if that matters.
Practice first even if it is just on the back of a pan. Yes squares are trickier to cover, but not impossible. Smooth the corners of your square first then ease the excess fondant in on the straight sides. If that is the look you want there is no reason that you won't be able to accomplish it.
i agree, square corners are "harder" but still with practice not that hard at all. and i definitely think square will give you a more contemporary look.
I would suggest you doing round cakes. If you haven't had enough practice time with the square cakes it will save you a lot of stress. I practice new ideas or techniques on cakes that don't have top priority. You get practice time in and keep your sanity! Also, there are several types of round contempory style cakes. The theme is simple, clean lines. Not a lot of frills, borders etc. That is the look you are going for. Good luck.
Round is definitly easier. But if you have plenty of excess fondant rolled out squares are not too bad - raise the cake up so the fondant will hang over the sides as you smooth it out.
