I went to the dr last Thursday and was told I have a mild case of asthma. I have been smothering a little and it kinda hurts when I take a deep breath but other than that i'm fine. She gave me an inhaler but I hate to use it. I HATE medicines. I know that's crazy but I hate to even take a tylenol. I used it earlier and it did help a little but I hated using it so much. I guess I will use it only when absolutely necessary. Anyone else have asthma and hate their inhaler too? If so, what else do you do to help your asthma problems if anything?

Asthma is lousy but you have to take it seriously! If you're supposed to use the inhaler regularly, then use it! I know it's nasty. It can make you feel jittery. But, however nasty it is, it WAY better than having breathing problems!
There are daily drugs you can use that can keep asthma at bay. My son uses Pulmacort daily, which is a different type of inhaler. I know many people that take Singular, which is a small pill.
If your asthma is being caused by allergies, get tested. You may have to avoid pets. Keep your house as dust free as possible. Get rid of heavy scurtain and pillows in your bedroom to help keep dust mites at bay.
Be sure to use your breathing treatment at the first sign of tightness. Believe me, you don't want to find out what happens in a severe attack!

*hugs* Be grateful there is a medication that can help you!

My son had asthma until 2 years ago. He had three inhalers. One: used once a day, 2nd: used twice a day, 3rd for attacks. When your Dr prescribed the inhaler, was it just for relief or for prevention? If it's for relief, you need to use when its necessary. But on the other hand, if it's for prevention you need to use it regularly, like prescribed: once or twice a day, depending on what the dr said. Asthma is really serious, you need to take care of it. And make sure you find what causes your asthma: allergies, smoke, mold, dry air..... like you can get rid of it, and maybe make your asthma go away, or at least happen less often....

have a great day

I have asthma too. Listen to Jodie and Pootchi!! It is nothing to mess around with!! Do what the Doc tells you, like Jodie said, be glad that there are medicines for it. I know a boy who had an asthma attack and caused severe brain damage because he didn't have medicine, he'll never be able to walk or speak again. So do what you need to do to keep it under control. Good luck!

My son was diagnosed with asthma at 14 months...after we rushed him to the pediatric ER with a high fever, sweating (babies don't usually sweat) and a twice as normal breathing rate. Stayed there for a few days and went home with a nebulizer. Now he is 9 and takes Singulair every night as a preventative, and only occasionally has to use his rescue inhaler.

You might want to find out if you are allergic to anything that might trigger an attack. The tests aren't fun, especially if you are 6-years old, but it might help you treat your asthma better.

I've had asthma for awhile now and I hate it but what can you do (I used to smoke-self inflicted I know, plus my mom has it) I never wanted to use my inhalers either! I had one I was supposed to take everyday and one for attacks only. Well, let me tell you after a few trips to emergency because I couldn't breath I started using my inhaler (the one for daily use) every day! Whenever I stopped using that inhaler I would have an asthma attack and I don't think my asthma is bad either. It's even worse when you get a cold so make sure your taking it daily. Most cases I was in emergency because I had come down with a cold which always went straight for my chest and wham into emerg I would go. The medicine they give you in there really makes you shaky and I found my heart would beat alot faster. Also, watch what other medicines you take, you might want to talk to your doctor about that because nobody told me and one day I took a NeoCitrin for colds and boom in the hospital because it has aspirin in it. Some people with asthma can't have aspirin, that's why I mentioned you should talk to a doctor about that.
If you control your asthma, you'll be fine, it's a pain to take the inhaler (only the one perscribed for daily use) everyday but in the long run it's better off. If you have allergies like I do it helps to take the allergy medicine too. I was like you though, don't like taking anything. My mom said even as a kid I would wait until it was so bad before I would take anything for the pain or illness.
I was in a car accident a few years ago and stupid me wasn't wearing my seatbelt knocked my head off the dash (lucky I didn't go throught the window) we hit head on to the side of a gravel truck. Anyways, was off of work for quite awhile but I refused to take any pain medicine. I was afraid of getting addicted to the pain meds because I've heard of so many stories of people getting addicted.
I'll stop rambling on now.....

Hope you feel better soon!

That's exactly what happens with my son...he has a cold for ever that never wants to go away, makes his asthma act up, and goes straight to his chest. He does manage to play soccer with no problems and he has a coach with asthma who looks out for him too, even though we never leave him there without one of us.

Don't worry about getting addicted, unless you have an addictive personality (other drugs, alcohol, etc.) and you know if you do or not. Does chocolate count? I'm inhaling it like crazy today!!

I don't think I have an addictive personality, I just like to smoke a lot, drink a lot and gamble. I just consider those past times....LOL! Just kidding! I hardly drink, I quit smoking and my husband and I only gamble once in awhile.
I'm glad it hasn't limited your son at all. I think if it's controlled you can still do what you want. At the beginning I thought I wouldn't be able to do certain things without my asthma acting up but I think if you are more active it's better. Keeps your lungs working if you know what I mean. I should take my own advise! LOL! I keep staring at my treadmill thinking oh I'll start tomorrow.....

My mom gave us a scare about 10 years ago with her asthma. She was cutting the grass (she is allergic-so she shouldn't have been doing that) anyways, she came inside because she was having an attack and she had the medicine at home the same stuff they give you in the hospital because we lived in a very small town with no hospital anyways, she started to get that ready when she turned kind of greyish blue and passed out. My dad actually had to revive her, her heart had stopped. He called an ambulance and they ended up air lifting her to Calgary, AB and they still didn't think she was giong to make it! She was in intensive care for awhile with tubes down her throught and breathing machines. She pulled through. She's the strongest women I know (other reasons as well!). This was all because of her asthma. Don't know what I would've done if we lost her. My dad didn't even know CPR but he managed to revive her. To this day he refuses to learn it because he says he doesn't want to have to use it. Stubborn!
Anyways, don't take asthma lightly....

I only have to use my inhaler as needed so that helps with my (no medicine attitude). Seriously, I hate being like that. Meds that make me nervous or jittery I hate the most. I forgot to add that I take singulair once a day too. I think mostly it's the fact that I am afraid of getting addicted to a medicine. I've never been addicted to anything except smoking and I gave that up 5 1/2 years ago. I had a c-section with my son and would only take motrin because I was afraid of getting addicted to the percocets (spelling?) My dad's side of the family have drug problems so I think I am afraid that I might also given the chance to be which is why I am so afraid of meds. I hope and pray that my son dosent's develop asthma. It's scary enough that I have it. I thought you all would probably tell me what my DH does to stop worrying so darn much. Thanks everyone. It really helps to share your worries and fears with others.

I hate my inhaler. I try not to use it at all, I will go months with out needing it then all of sudden I have my shortness of breathe. But I also hate taking pills, I absolutly will not take any unless I am in dire need of it.

well i have had asthma since i was three and ,now 20yrs later, i still have it. at first it was allergy related, then in jr high and high school -excerised induced, and now both. i was on three inhalers during high school... i think because i was really active and didn't want to give up my sports. but now i am just on two. the one i take everyday--advair- has a little bit of steriods in it, which opens the lungs up and makes it alot easier to breath. i take my inhalers everyday, i notice when i forget to get it everyday. i wish i didn't have to but it has became a part of my life that i just do it with out think about it.

i do recommend that you definitly just take your inhaler. and if it is allergy reduce, find out what causes it and stay away from it. also when i notice that i am getting sick, i get myself to the doctor otherwise, it gets to bad and you have to do breathing treatsment which make you extremely jittering and feeling faint like.
