I have to make a cake for my DD's math class for national PI day. So it has to be circular...any ideas out there for this one? I am stumped here.

Pi like the math symbol? Just make a roung cake and cut a PI shape out of fondant to put on the top.. or a fbctf of a pi shape.HTH

I'm gonna do a 10.5 in 2 layer round cake covered in black satin ice fondant and do a chocolate PI symbol and then paint it with silver luster dusts. Thanks for the ideas, I have been waiting and waiting for my daughter to ask me to make her class a cake but then I paniced and my mind went cake blank! icon_redface.gificon_rolleyes.gif

Okay, my DS just came home saying he volunteered me for a pi day cake and oh, he needs it Wednesday morning - no problem right? I'm thinking of putting the symbol in the center and then putting letters out from that of pi to the 100th place. Are there any good ideas out there?

You survived and it looks great! I decided this afternoon that since my DS volunteered me for this, then DS is going to do the decorating. We're doing the tiles (where each color represents a different digit of pi). I cut out about 500 tiles out of fondant today. He's going to put those bad boys onto the sides of the cake. I then made a "pi-dye" pi to go on top. I'll post a picture if he gets it finished. I bet at around 9pm he's going to be trying to remember if light green means 1, or dark green means 1, or if marbled green means 1 lol. (( serves him right ))

2sdae ...Great looking cake!!! I love the color contrast and the sparkles! Nice job!!! I'm sure it will be the hit of Pi Day at your DD's school! thumbs_up.gificon_smile.gif

LanaC ... your idea sounds really cool, too! Please post a picture of the finished product! icon_smile.gif

P.S. - Did you know that there is a whole website devoted to Pi Day?!?! icon_wink.gifhttp://www.piday.org/

My DS finished his pi day cake about two hours ago. I think we ended up using close to 300 tiles on that thing. I tried making a pi-dyed pi to stand up by using dowels, but the fondant just wouldn't cooperate and I was really getting cranky. When your kid asks if you need a nice pot of coffee, you know you've reached your limit. (He did memorize pi to the 36th digit though while we were working)

Okay, the pi cake is posted. Fuzzy picture because I lost my camera at a party this weekend and I'm having to use an old one from the back of my junk drawer. He's quite proud, by the way and the kids were all able to crack the color code.

It's amazing the things I learn on CC. I for the life of me have never heard of Pi day. How long has this been going on?

The numeric value of pi is 3.1415926.... Anyway, schools, particularly middle grades, celebrate and study pi on 3/14 - Pi Day. My son ended up memorizing pi to the 56th place (yet can't remember to tie shoes), they had quizzes on facts, etc. It's a brainiac reason to celebrate something in middle school that won't offend anyone.

Thank you LanaC. Never heard of it before. But at least I know what you are talking about now.
