Check out the forum penny's VS NFSC it has Penny's sugar cookie recipe I personally like this recipe but have tried both this and the No Fail Sugar Cookie recipe (NFSC) and they both are great.
Look under recipes on this site and you will find the recipe for NFSC and royal icings that you might like to try.
MMF (marshmallow fondant) is great for cookies also I like Alice's Cookie Icing, tastes great or Toba Garrett's Glace.
Look through the forums for hints there is a lot of help here and everyone is great!!
