I found this cake on a website a few years ago. For the life of me, I can't find it again. (I hope I'm not breaking any rules by posting a cake that's not mine).

Originally, I was going to make it for my daughter's Sweet 16, but that didn't happen, so I'd REALLY like to make it for her high school graduation. (Yes, she is a HUGE Elmo fan still).

I'm not too worried about the cake(s), but Elmo is where I need help. I was thinking of hitting my local cake decorating shop, because they sell everything you can think of, and looking for some chocolate molds that I could use for Elmo's body and head. Maybe a couple of sugar molds for his eyes? And then cover him up with some thick buttercream?

Has anyone ever attempted anything like this, and if so, any hints or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!

I could see using some stacked rounds that were craved a bit for the body, a ball cake for the head. The key would be supports in there. Arms could be cookies that were covered in icing. Legs you could use scraps to make them, mini wonder mold or mini ball pan for the fet.

I haven't attempted something like this, but that is where I would start if I wanted to do something like that. Hopefully some of the other talented people could give you some more concrete advice.

To me, the body looks like an egg pan standing on end, the head looks to be a ball (- you could even get away with styrofoam, it's for family!) and then the icing buit out to make his pointy cheeks, the arms look flat and could even be iced cardboard. I'd do the arms and legs out of mini-cupcakes strung onto pre-bent lollipop sticks. The feet could be cupcakes cut to shape. I'd run a dowel through the entire thing - head through bottom layers, for stability. Looks like fun!

IMO, I don't think it's a problem using a picture of someone elses cake as long as you're not trying to pass it off as your own! If it were mine I'd be flattered, it's a great cake!

Keep us posted!

Another thought, if you aren't worried about needed him for servings (how would you cut a cake like that? icon_wink.gif) then you could always use rice crispie treats to form the head, body, arms and legs, then cover them in buttercream.

I'm with TexasSugar--I'd hand mold this guy out of rice krispie treats and then pipe his fur with buttercream. You could mold a body and attach it to the tiers with one long dowel and attach the other body parts using dowels and icing.

Look forward to pics when you're finished!

Rice Krispy treats to mold a body! I'm learning so much from everyone on this forum. : ) Never would have thought to do this... you're all so very clever. : ) Seriously, wish I could come up with this stuff and wow myself once in awhile!

I am absolutely amazed. An Elmo made of Rice Krispie treats is a FANTASTIC idea. Then the kids actually could rip him apart and eat him. Hmm.. that sounds kind of psycho, but they *are* teenagers, after all.

Thanks so much for all the great ideas... keep 'em coming!

One thing I forgot to mention is that, since this is for her graduation, I'd like to dress Elmo in a cap and gown. Do you think this would be easier with regular fondant, MMF, candy clay.... (or should I pull out the sewing machine and whip up an Elmo-sized cap and gown?!)

(I knew this was the right place to come. The people on this forum are the smartest, most creative, most helpful of any cake decorating forum I've been to!)

I did the Wilton bear in a fondant cap & gown for a doctoral candidate. It was pretty easy to just free-hand cut pieces and put them together on the body. The buttercream fur held it on just fine. I used Satin Ice chocolate fondant and added just a bit of black to it to get it darker because the gown was black. I would think either type of fondant would work just fine.

okay, i actually attempted this cake last night!!!! i used the egg pan for the body and the ball pan for the head, and mini loaf cakes for arms and legs. it would've been so cute too!!!! .... but the body crumbeled under the wieght of the head. i didnt use a pound cake, just a dh cake.
after experimenting with this and it not working out....i think if i ever did this again i would use rice crispys for at least the body, maybe everythning else too. then i would sit him on an actual cake.

at 10:30pm i realized the cake was crumbling due to the wieght and would not work.....so i took it apart and used the pieces for something else. i turned the pieces into an alligator. the head was the egg shaped cake, and i took ball cake apart and laid them flat for the body, loaf pans were legs and tail.

good luck with yours
melody

It is funny that the cake at Dessert Works is practically the same! I don't know where I found the original picture, but it doesn't look like it was from there (I checked the whole site).

I had really originally planned on using chocolate molds to build him (hollow, of course), but I think the Rice Krispies treat idea is really going to work well. I've got plenty of time to play around and perfect it since graduation is few months away.

Thanks again to everyone for their ideas!
