I have been making the wilton recipe, with all shortening. I'm making a cake right now and was thinking of switching to half shortening, half butter and skipping the MP. Will it still crust?

yes - I frequently use either all butter or half butter and half (high ratio) shortening with no MP - it does crust for me...
