Hello everyone,
I just started my third Wilton course yesterday. My instructor told us we need to purchase Wilton fondant to do the gift cake and wedding cake and all the roses. (but if I want i can use MMF) Now I have made MMF and used it and love the way it is pliable and I can do pretty much anything with it.
But she said I needed to add gumtex to the Wilton fondant to make it more stretchy. Now my questions are:
1. Do I have to really use the Wilton fondant being that you all hate the taste of it, and I love the taste of MMF? (By the way I have to eat the cake also)
2. If I use MMF can I add the gumtex or do I have to add the gumtex or is MMF pliable enough for the roses and other stuff we need to do?
Please help ( I really don't want to taste Wilton fondant)
Thanks
Sylvie
In my case I don't mind the Wilton fondant when I add almond extract. It makes a huge difference. Also, if you don't make it too thick, it is not so bad...
I always suggest my students use the premade for lesson 2 so they can get the feel of what fondant should feel like, but let them make homemade if they want to do it on the final cake. If she doesn't care and you feel comfortable with how your MMF feels then use the MMF.
Either way you are still going to need to add the gmu tex to either that you work with for the roses and the bow (not for covering the cake). The gum tex will help the fondant dry faster and harder. So it will help your petals on your roses stay upright and your bows dry quicker so they hold their shape. Adding the gum tex makes your fondant more like gumpaste. Gumpaste dries alot faster than fondant so fondant with the small amount of gum tex is sorta in the middle. It gives you more time to work with it, so you can get the hang of it, but dries faster than just fondant.
You can also add candy flavorings (the oils) to fondant to improve the taste of it.
