First off, I am fairly new to the cake decorating thing, so I don't have a lot of experience in this field. I am making a cake for a horror movie convention in June where all the big horror stars and directors will be there. I am not getting paid for this cake, it's just a fan paying homage to some of their favorite stars and movies. Anyway, I was just wanting to get some opinions on what the cake looks like so far. We are just in our practice runs right now. Everything on the cake is completely edible and the heads are horror movie characters sculpted from fondant. All the letters, including the flames on the letters are made from royal icing. I just wanted to get some opinions on whether you think the cake looks ok or have any suggestions for me. Just remember, this is a practice cake and everything from the cake to the heads will be remada, and I also purposely made the cake unleveled for the occasion. I was not wanting it to look perfect, as it is for a horror convention. Please, tell me what you think.

Looks like you're well on your way with this project! And by the "sound" of your post, you're super excited about this, too.

I might only suggest what I might do with the cake. I would probably "elevate" the heads a little bit, by placing a small layer of cake directly under the heads, so that they're kind of on their own little "pedestal." And maybe put something around the bottoms of the heads to kind of "frame" it?

And your set up looks good, too. Will there be other stuff on the table besides the three cakes? Like other snacks/treats too? That'll be good. Maybe some black/dark colored tulle or whatever with some extras to kind of "frame" the cakes for presentation.

All in all--great work and good going! Welcome to CAKE CENTRAL!!

The blood drips down the side is a really great touch. I would not have thought of that.

I think your cake looks great. Your fondant heads turned out very nice and I think the dripping "blood" is a very nice touch also. Be sure to post the cake you are taking to the convention.

Thanks everyone! i also liked the idea of using platforms and the tulle. Just one more question. Since the fondant heads will not be eaten, how fan in advance do you think I can make them? I was going to shoot for 2 weeks before the convention just to make sure i have enough time to sculpt them all and have time to paint and let it dry. No one will be eating the heads but they will be sitting on top of the cake, will that make a difference?

Not a big horror fan, but the cake looks pretty cool. I agree w/ everyone that the 'blood' is a great touch. I also think the heads might look good elevated a little bit.

The main thing I wanted to comment on is that if you are going to have the cake be 'unlevel' you may want to stick the the top only, and try to keep the sides straight. I think that helps it look more professional and not so homemade.

You want them to know a fan made it that is really also a cake decorator so that it gets eaten, not just seen! icon_smile.gif

I think your heads look great...I also think you don't need to re-make them. Unless you are changing them....store them in a tupperware in a cool dry area.....nothing will happen to them....
