OK, my name is slowly trickling out there, but this next weekend is my son's school fair and I've signed up to do 2 cake walk cakes and some cupcakes for their bake sale.

For the cupcakes I'm doing a swirl on top with either a little violet on top or shamrocks.

but what to make for the cakewalk cakes? I want people to say "wow" and I want all the kids to want MY cake! LOL

Should I make them unisex? What age group??? I'm wanting to stick to a standard size cake for one... maybe my space shuttle cake for the other... so they will see a 3d cake and a regular one... I'm thinking a FBCT... but what? WHO??? Something with a St. Pat's theme?? or ???

How difficult are royal icing flowers? Like the apple blossoms and/or wild roses? How many extra would I need to make to deal with breakage?

I can make buttercream roses fine, but I want to make something springy!

Royal icing flowers are fairly easy and you would only need to do a few extra for breakage...I never really experience any breakage so I don't think that would be a problem. As far as designs...I agree to do something that not only "wows" the kids, but the parents too. Talk to your son and see what his opinion is. Chances are that what he really likes, his friends would really like too. My son loves to help me design my cakes! Then at the event, he will brag to his friends that his mom did the cake and he helped, mine always does!

Depending on the age group (I'm guessing elementary) anything that is popular on TV. For example, The Replacements or SpongeBob. Anything that both girls and boys would watch on Disney or Nick.

Sounds like fun!

What are the school colors or the school mascot? Our mascot is an eagle, so i slowly backed away from all those feathers, but our school colors are green and gold. So I just made a 2 layer oval in green and gold with the school name. It was very very simple and I know you want more of a "WOW" effect, but just an idea that you may be able to jump off of.

Oh, that's a good idea!!!! Their mascots are the Kangaroos!

this is the school's home page image - this would be pretty cute, huh?

I'll have to ask DS the school colors - I can't remember and I know he opted for the gray t-shirt, so that's no helpful!

For the cake walk cakes just make sure that you do something vibrant. Especially, if it's elementary. The drop flowers sound great, and they are really easy to make. Why not go for something easy to make like some cartoon like flowers with faces or just one face. School colors are a great idea too! Why not even an animal theme!? Whatever you do the kids will think it's great! GOOD LUCK! thumbs_up.gif

That's a cute kangaroo and not too detailed. Even in my short experience, that could probaby be done with a FBCT, right? I vote for the kangaroo for one and the space shuttle for another! thumbs_up.gif

The Kangaroo is really cute. If you can do a 3-D Kangaroo with Fondant with little fondant apples would be really cool, but probably a lot of work for a cake walk.

The Hamburger Cake is hugely popular where I am at.
