I have an order for an opal cake for the Opal Symposium 2007. I need help for some ideas on how to decorate the cake, imitating an opal as much as possible. One idea we have come up with is to create a jelly dome above a dark sponge. Using multi-colored jelly cubes inside the dome to imitate the wonderful colors that sparkle out. When on display it will have lights positioned in such a way that the colors will reflect it like real opal. How do I achieve the jelly dome effect? Is gelatine easy to work with? Do you think it will work?

I would put a cake board between the top of the cake and the jelly, and cover the board in a metallic/irridescent material that has opal-like colors/characteristics (have seen stuff like that in wrapping paper).

So are you saying that I should just use clear jelly with board, instead of multi-colored cubes.

If you get metallic candy wrappers, crumble them then open them back up (for surface texture), place them strategically into a pattern similar to the minerals at the center of the opal, then glue them to the cake board.

If you want to use jelly top with this, just use some plain clear gelatin, add a tablespoon or two of milk to the water, then place that on top of the covered board.
