How do you apply real flowers to cakes and where do you get the flowers that aren't heavily treated with pesticides?
That's a really good question. I've been strugling with it for a while now. The only places I can think of to find pesticide free flowers would be a friends garden (though you sitll have to be careful and ask a lot of questions) or an organic florist (if such a thing even exists). As for appling them to the cake I know of a few differet options. One is to use a special bowl or flower holders (wilton sells a few different types), and another is to place them on top of waxed paper on top of the cake.
Now I'm not fond of either option due to asthetics, though the containers/flower spikes look alot better than waxed paper in my oppinion. So, while thinking about this problem, I wondered how it would work if I was placing flowers on top of a cake, and let the icing crust (to prevent sticking), then placed down some waxed paper and iced over it... that way there would be a barior betweenthe flowers and the cake, but they would still be directly icing so you wouldn't be able to tell that there was a barrior. I figured you could leave a little tab of the paper sticking out to help with removing it and the contaminated icing and flowers before surving the cake.
I've never tried this, but it seems like it would work it my head! Does that make sence at all? Sorry, I'm not quite sure how to explain. Anyway I would be really interested in any other opineons and sugestions for puting flower on a cake!
